Intro
This site is what is known as a portal site. It is designed to be interactive, meaning that it is created in large part by the visitors. In this guide, I'll tell you something about how it works.
Note that to make full use of the site, you will need to have cookies enabled, as that is the only way we can keep track of where you want to go. And one or two places make use of javascript, so you should have that enabled as well, although the site will function without.
Types of user
From the front page, you will find yourself looking at a collection of boxes, each with a different application in them. The exact layout will depend on what type of user you are. We recognize three kinds of users:
- anonymous users -- when you first arrive here you are an anonymous user.
- registered user -- by clicking on the 'Your account' link on the right, you can register yourself with the system. If you have cookies, the site will remember you when you return and log you in again.
- administrators -- these shadowy creatures lurk in the darker confines of the site and hold the power of life and death over our ramblings.
Anonymous users can view everything on the site. At present they can submit news although they cannot submit comments. These things may change at a later date.
Registered users can view everything and they can also post comments, reply to comments and enter news. They can also change the theme of the site they are viewing, provide personal details and contact information (web site, email, ICQ number and so on). Personal details are optional and are not required.
Administrators are, as mentioned, bog creatures. We found ours roaming wild on Dartmoor and now have them shackled to desks in the basement.
The areas on the site.
The center part of the page that you see is the bit that changes
depending on where on the site you are. On the left and the right are a set of boxes and links that take you to other areas of the site. At the top is the title section and at the bottom of the page is the links and miscellaneous stuff.
On the left...
- Main Menu
- Here are two links, one that takes you
back to the main page, the other takes you to your account if you want
to change any of the details. Or to register if you are not registered.
- Other options
- These are links to the main sections on the site. They are:
- Submit News -- got a hot news item? Submit it here (see
notes further down.).
- Osho Quotes -- our growing list of disorganised Osho quotes.
- Sannyas links -- A list of categorized links to sannyas related
web sites. Probably the largest sannyas directory on the 'Net.
- Members List -- is a list of members and whatever details
they choose to make public.
- Recommend Us -- hey, if you like it, let someone else know!
The more the merrier.
- Downloads -- not much at present.
- Search -- search the site
- Topics -- A list of current topics
- Top Stories -- A list of the most read stories
- Who's online?
- Statistics about who is online at the moment.
- Friends and Lovers
- Logos from web sites that link to us.
And, on the right hand side of the page (when looking at the home
page, you won't see it when you're reading this)...
- Random Image
- A picture of... guess who?
- Rebellious Spirit
- An RSS feed from the RebelliousSpirit site.
- If you aren't logged in, you will see a login box here.
How they work
Submitting News can be done by anyone. Once you have clicked on
the submit news link, you go to the news submission page. Enter a
descriptive title, select a topic (or whatever seems closest), a
language (stick with English at present) and then enter the text for
the article. Underneath the text box you can see a list of HTML tags
that are acceptable in the text. If you don't know HTML, just enter
the text.
Next, select the preview button, you then get to see the text you
entered and how it looks and either reedit it, or send it off to the
great news room in the sky.
It won't appear immediately in the page, currently we are approving submissions before posting them. Abusive or puerile contributions are fed to the bog creatures.
Registration
-- what does it entail? When you click on the 'Your Account' link, you head off to the page where you can register for the site. For registration, the only thing you need is a user name and an email address. The user name can be whatever you want to be known as on the site (MasterOfTheUniverse is a good one). The email address is needed so that you can receive the password.
There are also options to enter your website, select a funny face,
ICQ/AIM/YIM numbers and so on. By default your email address will be hidden from other users unless you specifically check the box to make it visible.
On the subject of email addresses, I strongly suggest you get a 'throw away' email address for whenever you are on public web sites, and don't use your main one. Its easy to sign up for an email address at Yahoo or MailAndNews.com, to mention two examples.
